When I started this blog over nine years ago, back in February 2010, I made an about page that said I was 41 years old and had been happily married to Fiona for 17 years. I said I was father to three boys: Daniel (12 years old), Matthew (10) and Jonno (7). And I included this photo of my with them, crouching in front of a whale jaw in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History:
But time rolls on, and that page is long overdue a overhaul. I’m now 51 years old and have been happily married to Fiona for very nearly 26 years. I’m still father to the same three boys but now they’re 21, 19 and 16. (Jonno will turn 17 in five days.)
So here we are, back in front of the same baleen-whale skull, the best part of a decade later:
We did our best to recreate the original pose, but because we were doing it by looking at a copy of the old photo, we were the wrong way round — so I had to cheat by manually reversing the photo. (That’s why the wording on my and Matthew’s shirts is off.) Otherwise, I’m pretty happy with this.
As it happens, every single other word of the original About page is still true, so my update is just to change the ages and the photo.
For anyone who wants a family update: Dan finished at Oxford in June, and will shortly start his dream job as a Government Economist on the civil service fast track, beginning at the Office of National Statistics in Newport, Wales. (Hey, everyone has their own dreams — don’t judge.) Matthew is one year into a degree in computer-game design at the University of Gloucestershire, which he describes as “everything I could have hoped”. Jonno is half way through his “A”-levels, and trying to figure out what to do at university. As well as being a music therapist, Fiona is now also a film-and-television composer.
