Uh, not so great. Why do you ask?

  1. Dude, I’m pretty sure 200 calories of rice and a few ounces of raw fish are not what’s making you fat.

    Are you filling those California rolls with Philadelphia cheeze or something? It’s astonishing what nasty stuff the Californians will eat.

  2. Here are the ingredients in full:

    * 200ml (one small cup, about 160g) rice — 560 calories
    * 200ml water
    * salt, rice-wine vinegar and mirin for the cooked rice
    * two sheets (5g) of nori (pressed seaweed) — 15 calories
    * one salmon fillet (125g) — 145 calories
    * four surimi “crab sticks” (60g) — 60 calories
    * half an avocado — 140 calories
    * mayonnaise — maybe 60 calories
    * wasabi powder, made up into paste
    * soy sauce for dipping
    * gari (pickled ginger)

    So that comes to 980 calories plus whatever the salt, vinegar, mirin, wasabi, soy sauce and gari contribute. So call it a round thousand. As a 100kg 45-year old male, my recommended daily intake is about 2500 calories, so on the face of it this is not too bad — 40% of my day’s food. In fact, I didn’t each much else at all yesterday — just a smallish chicken and avocado salad in the evening. So I should be ahead of the game even after what felt like a very substantial lunch.

    On the other hand I do drink a lot of fruit juice — maybe a bit more than a litre a day on average. So that’s another 500 calories or so.

  3. Looks like I underestimated the calories of the salmon. According to the pack, it’s 229 per 100 grams, which makes a 125 fillet 286 calories. So add 140 to my total.

  4. Fruit juices do damage out all proportion to their calories.

    Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with fruit. But taking the sugars out of the fruit, and concentrating them into a liquid form, without the accompanying fiber, makes for a very high glucose surge, which is a problem in and of itself, and that it’s accompanied by a high fructose surge that is even worse.

  5. Interesting. I’ve been drinking more fruit juice to get me off the beer. I guess I’ll just have to make it All Tea, All The Time. (Until you tell me the milk in it is killing me.)
